You have the keys to your new Madison home, a folder of moving paperwork and a free morning to take care of the car. Before you choose an office, separate two questions: which county is your home in, and are you registering the vehicle or transferring your driver license? In this part of Northern Alabama, those answers can send you to different counters.
The City of Madison spans Madison and Limestone counties. The city’s own service-provider guide explains that the county associated with an address can affect the provider. For a newcomer, the useful takeaway is to keep your city, county and specific transaction separate rather than treating “Madison” as a complete set of instructions.
Start with the county attached to your home
For an individually owned vehicle, Alabama’s Department of Revenue directs registration to the license-plate issuing office in the county where the owner resides. A nearby office is not automatically the correct county office for your transaction. Read ALDOR’s county-of-residence guidance before making the trip.
Confirm the county for the actual property, not just the city printed in the mailing address or the name used in a listing. Your property records are a useful starting point; if the address is unclear, ask the appropriate county office to confirm it. The City of Madison’s GIS page also connects readers to its map resources. A map is a way to investigate a question, not permission to substitute an approximate pin for the office’s address determination.
I would put the confirmed county near the top of a moving information sheet, alongside the full address. That saves you from repeating the same research when another service asks which jurisdiction applies. Keep the distinction even when two homes have similar mailing addresses: the paperwork should follow the home you actually occupy, not the one you nearly bought.
Your car’s registration and your driver license are separate tasks
ALEA’s current document-requirements page says an out-of-state driver-license transfer must take place at an ALEA office. Vehicle registration, by contrast, goes through the county licensing route described above. A county office that offers some driver-license services should not be assumed to handle an out-of-state transfer. Use ALEA’s out-of-state transfer checklist for the driver, and the county licensing office for the vehicle.
| Your task | Start here | Confirm before visiting |
|---|---|---|
| Register a personally owned vehicle after moving | Licensing office for your county of residence | County, transaction type, ownership documents, insurance and whether the vehicle must be present |
| Transfer an out-of-state driver license | ALEA driver-license office | Correct transfer document list, appointment or walk-in arrangements, and accepted documents for your situation |
| Apply for STAR ID with the license transaction | ALEA’s STAR ID guidance and document list | Required originals and any documents connecting a changed name |
| Renew an existing Alabama credential or registration | The issuing agency’s renewal instructions | Whether online or local renewal is available; do not use renewal instructions as a transfer checklist |
Keep a separate checklist for each adult driver and each vehicle. A household may have one car owned outright and another with a loan or lease, or drivers with different document situations. Tell the office those details when asking what to bring. A single generic “DMV folder” is less helpful than knowing which documents belong to which transaction.
Use the current office listing, especially in Athens
The addresses below are official directory listings checked October 24, 2026. The county entries are ALDOR’s primary licensing addresses, not a complete list of satellite offices. The ALEA entries are two local driver-license locations, not a rule that you must choose an ALEA office based on your county. Confirm the specific service and current arrangements before setting off.
| Office and purpose | Listed location |
|---|---|
| Madison County vehicle licensing | 1918 N. Memorial Parkway, Huntsville, AL 35801 |
| Limestone County vehicle licensing | 100 S. Clinton Street, Suite B, Athens, AL 35611 |
| ALEA Huntsville driver-license office | 7262 Governor's West, Suites 202–203, Huntsville, AL 35806 |
| ALEA Athens driver-license office | 503 S. Jefferson Street, Suite A, Athens, AL 35611 |
Use ALDOR’s county licensing directory for the first two entries. For driver-license visits, check the ALEA Huntsville listing or ALEA Athens listing. These source pages provide contact and operating information; a Maps result does not establish which transactions a counter can complete.
Athens has a particular reason to check the agency name carefully. ALEA announced its move from the courthouse annex to the South Jefferson Street location in December 2025, and the current ALEA directory lists the new address. The county vehicle-licensing entry in ALDOR’s directory still lists the Clinton Street location. Read ALEA’s relocation notice if older instructions point you toward its former office. The two listings describe different services, not interchangeable destinations.
Prepare the documents before planning the rest of the day
ALEA’s out-of-state transfer list includes the existing license, Social Security documentation, a primary identity document and two proofs of principal residence, with additional school documentation for applicants younger than 19. Review the complete current list, including its notes and accepted alternatives, rather than treating those categories as a complete personalized checklist.
If you want STAR ID, review that document list before the appointment as well. ALEA requires documents establishing identity and date of birth, Social Security number and principal residence; it says photocopies are not acceptable. A changed name can require certified connecting documents. Check the STAR ID document list while the records are still easy to find, rather than after they have gone into storage.
For the vehicle, tell the county office whether you have the title, a lienholder holds it, the vehicle is leased or ownership has recently changed. Ask which ownership and insurance evidence is required, whether anyone else named on the paperwork must attend, and whether the vehicle needs to be brought for the transaction. Those answers should come from the office handling your specific case. Do not assume a renewal kiosk or online renewal page can complete a first Alabama registration.
Put the correct timing on your moving calendar
ALDOR states that an owner of a noncommercial vehicle with valid registration from another jurisdiction has 30 days from the date the vehicle enters Alabama to register it. The trigger is the vehicle’s entry into the state, not automatically your closing date, first workday or the day the last box is unpacked. Read the state’s new-resident registration guidance and confirm how it applies to your situation.
Do not apply that statement to every vehicle or every transaction. A newly purchased vehicle, commercial vehicle or a situation involving a special exemption may follow different rules. Ask the licensing office promptly if your case is not the ordinary move described in the state guidance. This article does not determine an exemption or replace an agency’s instructions.
When building your first-week plan, leave room for a document question or another visit. Confirm the office’s current hours, available appointment arrangements, payment options and transaction cutoff before scheduling work, movers or showings around it. A published closing time is not a guarantee that every transaction can begin just before closing. Keep the confirmation information with the relevant checklist and protect the personal documents themselves.

Final Thoughts: Match the address, task and office
A smoother Madison move starts with getting the small distinctions right. Confirm your home’s county, separate the vehicle paperwork from the driver-license transaction and use the current agency listing for the trip. That turns a vague errand into a plan you can fit around the rest of your relocation.
