A Redstone job can put a reporting date on your calendar before you have worked out where your dog or cat will spend the first night. The employment offer, the pet’s travel documents and permission to keep the pet in a particular home answer different questions. Getting those answers in the right order can prevent an otherwise sensible housing plan from falling apart at arrival.
This guide focuses on dogs and domestic cats moving into Alabama from another state for a Redstone-area job or military assignment. Federal civilian and contractor households can use the state-entry and housing-planning sections. Military installation housing, veterinary eligibility and PCS benefits require their own confirmation; employment at Redstone does not establish any of them. Overseas arrivals and other animals need different guidance.
Start with the trip into Alabama, before the local registration
USDA explains that the receiving state sets interstate pet-entry requirements. Start with USDA’s state-to-state pet travel guidance, then give your veterinarian the actual origin, destination, travel date and species. A moving company’s household-goods paperwork is not a substitute for the animal’s documents.
Alabama’s Animal Industries import requirements say dogs and domestic cats entering the state need an official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, or CVI. The same guidance expressly says APHIS VS Form 7001 is not an approved interstate small-animal entry form. That distinction matters if an old online moving checklist tells you to download that form yourself.
Ask the accredited veterinarian to use Alabama’s current accepted certificate process and address rabies documentation for the animal’s age and vaccination status. Keep the completed travel documents accessible during the trip, separate from the boxes going onto the moving truck. A current rabies record and a correctly issued entry certificate are not interchangeable.
A practical question for the appointment is: “We are moving this dog or cat from another state into Alabama on this date. Which certificate will you issue under Alabama’s current requirements, and when should the examination take place?” Let the veterinarian establish the examination and certificate timing rather than borrowing a deadline from an airline or overseas checklist.
Alabama also posts additional New World Screwworm entry requirements, effective June 5, 2026, for animals from affected origins. Before fixing the travel date, have your veterinarian check the current infested-state, infested-zone and surveillance-zone rules with Alabama Animal Health. An affected trip may need additional permit, inspection and certificate timing. This is an origin-dependent check, not a claim that every pet move has the same requirements.
Match each permission to the place it actually covers
| Part of the move | What you need to resolve | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Entry into Alabama | The receiving-state veterinary paperwork for your animal and trip | Permission to keep the pet in a hotel, rental or installation home |
| Temporary lodging | Written acceptance of your particular pet, dates and applicable terms | Approval for the permanent home or a guarantee of boarding availability |
| Permanent home | The actual lease, association or installation-housing requirements that apply | A municipal license or veterinary-service eligibility |
| Local or installation registration | The rule for the physical residence and your household’s situation | Completion of the state-entry paperwork |
Use that table before paying for a stay. Give the lodging provider the species, number of pets and any size information it requests; ask for the applicable fees, restrictions, permitted unattended-pet arrangements and extension terms in writing. “Pet friendly” is a starting description, not a complete answer for a household whose closing date might move.
For a rental, read the actual pet provisions before making the move depend on that address. For a purchase, identify any applicable association restrictions and inspect the features you would rely on: the fence and gates, the route from the home to an outdoor area, and space for the animal’s normal routine. A listing photo cannot establish that a yard is secure, and a neighborhood name does not answer a particular property’s rules.
A Huntsville address and an on-post home have different follow-up
Huntsville’s pet-services FAQ says dogs and cats must be registered within 30 days of residency inside city limits. It also distinguishes the city license tag from the veterinarian’s rabies tag. The city’s pet-license page explains the required documentation. Apply that instruction to a residence actually inside Huntsville, not automatically to every Greater Huntsville mailing address or Redstone employee.
For installation housing, the official Redstone Shipping Pets directory contains a conflict: one passage gives three working days for registration and another gives five. It also lists microchipping and rabies documentation requirements. Do not choose the more convenient deadline. Before arrival, call the Redstone Veterinary Treatment Facility at 256-876-2441 with your housing situation and arrival date, and ask which registration deadline and documents apply.
The same directory says the facility works by appointment and provides neither emergency service nor boarding. Ask separately whether your household is eligible for care and how registration is handled; a registration requirement is not a promise of an appointment or ongoing treatment. Arrange an appropriate civilian veterinary and emergency-care plan if needed rather than treating the installation clinic as your fallback accommodation for the pet.
Plan for the gap between arrival, possession and the first workday
Imagine a household arriving on Sunday, receiving keys on Wednesday and reporting for work on Monday. This is a planning example, not a typical Redstone schedule. The important gap is Sunday through Wednesday: where is the animal allowed to stay, who is available during the first workday, and what happens if possession moves by another day?
Put the written lodging terms beside that calendar. If the property does not permit a pet to be left unattended, a room reservation alone has not solved Monday. If a caregiver or boarding provider is part of the plan, arrange acceptance, vaccination-document requirements, drop-off times and contingency availability directly before counting on it. Do not assume installation veterinary registration provides any of those services.
Keep a first-arrival bag with the animal’s familiar food and supplies, leash or appropriate carrier, travel records and any veterinary instructions. Those items should travel with the household, not depend on the delivery date of the larger shipment. This is a packing recommendation; medication, feeding during travel and an animal’s fitness to travel belong with the treating veterinarian.
Your first workday also deserves its own realistic household plan. My Redstone worksite and home-search guide explains why the actual reporting location and authorized access matter before comparing areas. Use that worksite information to think through the household’s routine; do not assume a map’s shortest route leaves time for a midday trip home.
Keep military benefits separate from the household budget
Military OneSource’s moving-with-pets guide provides a military starting point for transport planning and pet-related PCS questions. A federal civilian hire or contractor should not read military PCS guidance as a benefit promise. Ask your own employer or transportation office what is authorized for your situation, and retain the answer with the move’s budget.
My guide to reading a Redstone relocation package separates written expense authority from an incentive or hoped-for reimbursement. Keep pet transport, lodging charges and any care arrangements visible as separate budget items. A pet’s acceptance at the destination and payment of its moving costs are two different decisions.
Official guidance checked October 28, 2026. The installation directory’s conflicting registration deadlines are unresolved in the published source; confirm the applicable deadline directly. This is relocation and housing planning, not veterinary advice. The featured image is a fictional AI-generated moving scene, not a carrier-sizing or airline-approval illustration.
Final Thoughts
A pet-inclusive relocation works best when the trip, the temporary stay and the permanent home each have their own answer. Obtain the correct entry paperwork, arrange a place that actually accepts your animal and dates, and follow the registration rules for the residence you choose. None of those steps needs to wait until everything is on the moving truck.
For a Redstone household, that preparation protects the first workweek as much as the move itself. The right home search considers how the household will live after arrival, including the animal that is making the trip with you.
