Moving to Madison? Separate Garbage, Yard Waste and Recycling Providers

Conceptual Madison-area curb with separate dark garbage cart, blue recycling cart and neat yard-debris pile.

The first pile after a move is rarely one kind of waste. You may have kitchen trash, flattened boxes, a broken appliance, leaves from the yard, and a battery or paint can left in the garage. In the City of Madison, those do not all go to the same truck. The city lists separate arrangements for household garbage, large or yard debris, and recycling. A Madison mailing address alone does not establish that a home is inside city limits, so confirm the actual service address before using this guide.

Start with the address, then choose the waste stream

Madison spans Madison and Limestone counties. The city's service-provider directory says address and county can affect providers. Its recycling page specifically includes single-family City of Madison homes in both counties. Its garbage and trash page names Madison County Sanitation for household garbage and Republic Services for the city's large-item and yard-debris route. “Madison County Sanitation” is the provider's name here; it does not mean a City of Madison address on the Limestone side should automatically be excluded.

If you are unsure whether the property is within the city, use the City of Madison GIS and maps portal as a starting point and ask Public Works or the provider to confirm service for the exact street address. Do this before relying on a neighbor's schedule or an old utility bill. A city boundary, county line and postal label answer different questions.

What you have City-listed route The useful check before curbside placement
Ordinary household garbage Madison County Sanitation Confirm the address is served, cart instructions and the current holiday schedule. The city currently lists Thursday collection.
Yard debris or a large item Republic Services, under the City of Madison trash arrangement Check the street's separate route and the city's item guidelines. Do not put a contractor's construction waste into this pile.
Accepted recyclables that fit the blue cart Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), a division of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority Confirm the monthly pickup for the address and read the city's accepted-material list before filling the cart.
Paint, oil, batteries or other hazardous material Not the large-item/yard-debris route Use the city's recycling and hazardous-waste guidance to contact the Solid Waste Disposal Authority for its current process; do not put these items at the curb hoping a truck will take them.

This table is an address-specific planning aid, not permission to place every item listed at the curb. The current city and operator instructions control.

Keep weekly garbage separate from the large-item route

The city's garbage and trash page lists Madison County Sanitation for household garbage every Thursday, with a service contact of 256-532-3718. That is the first place to ask about the household cart, a missed collection, or a move-in address. The city's separate utility directory also identifies the same provider for garbage. Because pickup arrangements and holidays can change, check again before a particular collection week.

For yard debris and large items, the city names Republic Services and gives 256-327-4449. It links a street-by-street schedule from the garbage/trash page. Typical items listed there include tree limbs, brush, leaves, appliances and collapsed, bundled cardboard boxes. The city also lists a Public Works number, 256-772-8490, for large-debris and yard-refuse questions. Read these as two parts of one city arrangement: Republic is named as the collection contractor, while Public Works remains a city contact. They are not a third weekly household-garbage service.

There is an important distinction for moving boxes. The city says collapsed and bundled cardboard is among typical large-item route materials. Its recycling page separately accepts cardboard inside the blue cart if it is flattened, smaller than two feet by two feet, and fits. Choose the path that matches the box and the current instructions. Packing foam and plastic wrap are not made recyclable by putting them inside a cardboard box.

The city's large-item list expressly excludes construction materials, paint, oil, batteries, gas containers, televisions, computers, microwaves and tires, among other items. If a mover or renovation crew created the material, clarify who is responsible for disposal before they leave. For a questionable appliance or unusually large pile, call the listed service rather than inferring eligibility from a neighboring curb.

Blue-cart recycling has its own monthly rhythm

The city's RANA recycling page says the free blue-cart service is for single-family residences in the City of Madison, on either the Madison or Limestone county side. Pickup is monthly, not on the weekly household-garbage timetable. The page says there is currently no pickup for commercial property or apartment complexes. A renter in a detached single-family home should still confirm service for that address; a resident of an apartment complex should not assume the city blue cart applies.

This is an opt-in program: RANA's FAQ says eligible households must register for service and a cart. For a new or missing cart, the city directs residents to RANA and lists the Solid Waste Disposal Authority at 256-880-6054. Include the exact address when asking about the cart. RANA's schedule page says to call or email for the address's collection day and then use its current color-coded calendar. Do not assume the cart's day from a neighbor's route. The city lists paper, flattened cardboard, certain cans and narrow-neck #1 or #2 plastic bottles among accepted items, with preparation instructions. It says no plastic bags or wrap, no wide-mouth tubs, and no glass bottles or jars in the blue cart. Read the current complete list for an unusual item rather than relying only on the recycling symbol.

The city page also directs household batteries and motor oil to the household hazardous-waste facility, rather than curbside recycling. Check the disposal authority's current eligibility and hours before making a trip; a city link to a facility is not proof that every material, vehicle or resident is accepted at every time.

A move-in sort that avoids a second curbside trip

Before collection day, make four temporary groups: ordinary bagged household waste; clean cardboard and other accepted blue-cart recyclables; yard debris and eligible large items; and materials needing a separate disposal answer. Put each group on the calendar for its own service. If the prior resident left a cart, verify which program owns it and whether it is associated with the home. Confirm that the address is inside city limits, then ask the named provider about the actual route and any holiday change.

The simplest mistake is to treat “trash day” as one universal day. A Thursday household collection does not establish the Republic street route or the RANA monthly date. The other common mistake is treating any large thing as bulky trash. The city's exclusion list rules out several items that often appear during a move. A few minutes with the official pages and the service address is more useful than carrying the same rejected pile back from the curb.

If your next question is why a Madison address can sit in one of two counties, the separate Madison vehicle and driver-license guide explains that boundary issue for paperwork. Its office instructions do not decide your waste provider; use the city service pages above for that.

Final Thoughts

For a City of Madison move, identify the exact service address and sort by the material before looking up a pickup day. Household garbage, the Republic large-item route and the RANA blue cart each have different instructions. Keep excluded and hazardous material out of the curbside pile until the responsible agency confirms a safe disposal path.
