Gurley – Madison County

Gurley is a town in Madison County, with a Walker Street library stop and a very different outdoor outing nearby at Keel Mountain Preserve. If you are considering a move, separate those everyday destinations from the municipal boundary and from the services available at a particular home. This guide helps you plan a useful first visit and identify the right next questions before narrowing your search.

Gurley: town boundary from the 2024 U.S. Census Bureau, with the same boundary highlighted in a Northern Alabama locator inset. North is up. Editorial area: Greater Huntsville. Not a property or service-boundary map.

Where can I get a feel for everyday life in Gurley?

Start with Gurley Public Library at 225 Walker Street, Gurley, AL 35748. HMCPL lists public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning and meeting rooms, so this can be a practical stop for a document task as well as browsing books. Its posted hours are 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday; Sunday is closed. Holiday exceptions and the arrangements for a particular service still matter.

For a first visit, choose one task you would actually repeat after moving: picking up reading material, printing a document or attending a branch program. The Madison County library first-month guide explains card documentation and the difference between a study-room request and a meeting-room reservation. A listed amenity is not a reservation, and the library should not be treated as guaranteed private workspace.

Is Lost Sink the same kind of outing as a town stop?

No. The Nature Conservancy’s Keel Mountain Preserve offers the Lost Sink nature trail, with steep sections and potentially challenging footing. The operator describes limestone bluffs and sinkholes, and notes that the waterfall depends on rainfall. A photograph of flowing water is not a promise of the same conditions on your visit.

Use the preserve’s own directions to its small signed parking area off McMullen Road, rather than navigating to Gurley’s general map point. Keel Mountain has multiple owners: public access to the preserve does not open neighboring land. This is a separate destination in the surrounding area, not a claim that the whole mountain lies inside the town boundary shown above.

Plan What makes it useful Choose it for
Walker Street library visit Indoor resources and posted branch hours. An ordinary errand or a program you intend to use.
Keel Mountain Preserve An outdoor trail with steep ground and variable waterfall flow. A prepared hiking outing, not a quick level walking circuit.

Who handles a property question in the town?

The Atlas Alabama municipal directory lists Gurley Town Hall at 235 Walker Street, Gurley, AL 35748 and 256-776-3313. Give the town the street address, parcel reference and a plain description of the project—such as an addition or a home business—so it can identify the responsible review. A Gurley mailing address and the Census town outline are not substitutes for current jurisdiction.

The Madison County guide separates county property-record contacts from municipal planning and utility contacts. Keep those answers separate when comparing homes: a parcel lookup identifies the land, while the responsible office determines the process for a proposed use. This page does not establish water, sewer, electricity or broadband availability for an individual property; request each provider’s address-level service answer before treating it as part of the home.

How do I start school questions without relying on the mailing city?

Madison County Elementary School’s official page identifies its Gurley campus and describes a pre-K-through-eighth-grade school; its published contact is 256-851-3290. The name “Elementary” alone therefore does not explain all the grades described by the school. Confirm the current grade arrangement and the student’s assignment with the district rather than inferring either from a listing.

The Madison County Schools zone resource directs readers to the City of Huntsville interactive maps: open Map Layers, filter by School, then select Madison County School Zones. Use the full home address and intended school year, and have the district confirm the result before starting enrollment. The resource’s directions are verified here; no individual address has been tested. Huntsville City Schools and Madison City Schools are different systems, not alternate names for the county district.

Turn a visit into a home-search comparison

For each candidate home, record the trip you would make to the library or preserve separately from the work commute. Jessica’s Huntsville-area commute planning guide explains why the work entrance and arrival time matter more than a town-wide travel-time claim. Then pair that route plan with the property and school responses, so the comparison rests on your routine rather than a generic description of town life.
