Grant’s everyday routines are easier to plan when you distinguish the town from the service areas around it. The library uses a route-based eligibility measure, the water provider publishes different charges for account deposits and new work, and a nearby cave visit follows a guided-tour schedule rather than ordinary park arrival hours.

Map sources and notes
Can I arrange a library card before my first visit?
Yes, the Grant Public Library application page offers online and in-person applications, but the card is issued only when the applicant comes to collect it. Unfinished applications not picked up within 30 days are deleted. The library describes its service area as within 20 miles by the shortest Google Maps route—not a straight-line circle and not simply the Grant municipal boundary.
Bring current identification with the correct address. For a recent move, the library also accepts address evidence such as a current lease, utility bill or mail showing the accurate name and address. A parent or guardian account must be linked to juvenile accounts. The first card is free; replacement cards are listed at $5. Use the library’s own application process for personal information.
The library’s published hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Wednesday and Saturday 9 a.m.–1 p.m., with Sunday and Monday closed. Call 256-728-5128 to resolve eligibility or visit arrangements. A Wednesday afternoon trip that works for another office will not fit these library hours.
For a paperwork errand, its services page lists black-and-white printing/copies at 10 cents per page and color copies at 30 cents. It also lists faxing and lamination. Keep those practical services in mind while household equipment is still packed, and check the format and payment arrangements before making a special trip.
What is the difference between a water deposit and a new connection?
North Marshall Utilities Board’s official website lists its office at 4141 Cathedral Caverns Highway, Grant, AL 35747, 256-728-4116, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Ask about the actual property and meter; a Grant mailing address alone does not establish service availability.
The provider’s linked rate sheet, effective January 1, 2024 separates residential account deposits, usage charges, impact fees and connection charges. For regular three-quarter-inch residential service, it lists a $100 owner deposit or $175 renter deposit and a $24 minimum covering 0–2,000 gallons. These are dated published figures, not a current property-specific quote.
| Situation | Question supported by the rate sheet | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Taking over existing service | Which meter size and owner/renter deposit apply? | An account deposit is not the entire cost of new infrastructure. |
| Building or adding a connection | Which connection, tap and impact charges apply to this project? | The sheet lists them separately; do not add or substitute them without the provider’s scope. |
| Planning landscaping or fencing | Keep the meter box accessible under the provider’s rules. | Do not enclose or alter utility equipment as if it were ordinary yard space. |
For a plumbing project, have the provider and a qualified plumber clarify the utility/customer boundary before work starts. The rules distinguish utility-owned meter equipment from the customer’s service line; they do not authorize a homeowner to adjust or damage the meter.
How should I plan a Cathedral Caverns visit from the Grant area?
The town identifies Cathedral Caverns as a nearby attraction, but use the state park’s current cave-tour instructions for the actual visit. Entry into the cave requires a guide. Reserved visitors must check in at least 15 minutes before their tour; the operator describes approximately 90 minutes and about 1.5 miles round trip. That is a scheduled walking outing, not a drop-in overlook.
The park advises that school-group mornings are especially busy February–May and September–November, suggesting noon or later during those periods. Call 256-888-0230 about current tour availability and any mobility needs; do not assume a broad accessibility description settles the route’s suitability for every visitor. Pets are not permitted on cave tours.
For an above-ground alternative, the official hiking page distinguishes interconnected blue, green, gray and yellow trails available sunrise–sunset from the red interpretive trail behind the Welcome Center, listed 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Use the operator’s route map and current conditions, not the town’s boundary illustration, to choose your outing. The park contact page identifies 637 Cave Road, Woodville, AL 35776; the Woodville postal address does not make the cave part of Grant’s municipal outline.
Connect those routines with a specific home
The Marshall County guide supplies the next property-record and school-system contacts, while the commute planning guide helps test travel beyond these local errands. Compare the actual home with the destinations you would repeat; a library service route, utility account and park tour each answer a different part of that decision.
