Buying a house that already has running water and choosing an empty homesite near Arab can both lead to the same question: “How do I get the utilities turned on?” But they are not the same job. One may involve establishing your account on existing equipment. The other may involve a new connection, its own charges and a separate answer about wastewater service. That distinction belongs in the home decision, before it becomes a moving-week surprise.
For a newcomer, the useful starting point is not a long list of telephone numbers. It is knowing which kind of request to make. Here is how to separate the existing-home handoff from a new connection around Arab, with the provider documents that explain the difference.
Jump to the request comparison, the water-connection example or the electric overlap question. The featured image is an AI-generated illustration of a fictional home, not an Arab property listing.
First identify the job attached to this home
Arab Electric Cooperative describes a system extending across Marshall, Morgan and Cullman counties. Its service-area overview is a reminder that a provider footprint is not simply the city boundary. It does not establish service at every address in those counties. Begin with the specific property and the provider already serving it, rather than assuming that the word Arab on a mailing address settles all the accounts.
The city utility directory lists electricity, water, sewer and natural gas separately. For an existing home, ask the seller or landlord for provider names and whether each service is currently active; you do not need their private account credentials. For a proposed home, describe it as a new connection from the beginning. That tells the provider you need a different answer from a routine account change.
| Your situation | The useful request |
|---|---|
| Existing home with a water meter | Ask Arab Water Works about starting your account on the existing meter. |
| Homesite without a water meter | Ask about the connection and tie-on requirements, not just the account-start fee. |
| Moving between two AEC-served homes | Describe the dates when you need both locations powered. |
| Water service is identified, but wastewater is unclear | Ask the Sewer Department separately about availability and connection fees. |
| City garbage service applies | Distinguish the water-bill charge from the City Hall route for a missed pickup or damaged cart. |
Use the rows that fit your property. They are different questions, not a checklist implying every house has every service. The supporting water, electric, sewer and garbage instructions are linked in the sections below.
An existing meter and a new meter have different startup math
Arab Water Works directs new customers to its office at 526 Cullman Road, Arab, AL 35016. For a location with a meter, its start-service instructions call for an application, a nonrefundable service fee and payment of any outstanding balance due. The posted service fee for a meter one inch or smaller is $120. A location without a meter also requires a tie-on fee; the listed amount for a three-quarter-inch meter is $1,000.
For that particular meter size, the two listed components would total $1,120: $120 plus $1,000. Compare that with the $120 service-fee component when the meter is already present. This is a worked example from the posted schedule, not a complete construction estimate or confirmation that a site can connect. Ask Water Works what applies to the actual location and whether other work or charges would be involved.
That changes how you compare two properties. If one has an established connection and the other is a build site, a single “utilities” allowance hides a meaningful difference. Put account charges, provider connection work and any work on the property on separate lines in your budget. Have the responsible provider or contractor identify the scope for each line; do not let one quoted fee stand in for all three.
For a seller, useful evidence is the provider name and the known connection arrangement, shared through the transaction process. A meter box in a photograph is not a substitute for the provider confirming the service status. For a buyer, the useful outcome is a written answer tied to this location, not merely reassurance that water is nearby.
Tell AEC when you need both homes powered
A short overlap can make a move much easier: you may want lights for unpacking at the new house while finishing cleaning at the old one. AEC’s official new-service application includes a scheduled turn-on date and requires picture identification. It also warns that keeping service on at both locations longer than 10 days requires an additional deposit.
That is a practical reason to work backward from possession and the final clean-out, rather than using one date for everything. If you expect to move over two weekends, explain the full period you need. If repairs may extend the overlap, ask how that changes the deposit and stop-service arrangement before relying on the shorter plan. The form does not promise a same-day connection or establish the amount of that additional deposit.
Keep your requested date separate from the provider’s confirmed date. A submitted form is one milestone; an accepted arrangement for the property is another. Send identity and account information only through the provider’s designated process, not as part of a general moving message or public listing attachment. Do not operate utility equipment to bridge a scheduling gap.
Water availability does not answer the sewer question
The city specifically directs customers to the Arab Sewer Department at 256-586-6148 for sewer availability and applicable connection fees. That separate contact in the city directory matters when comparing an existing home with land or a new build. A water account is not your evidence of a sewer connection.
For an existing property, establish the actual wastewater arrangement and obtain the relevant records. For a proposed build, describe the parcel and planned use to the responsible office. Your decision needs the arrangement that serves this property, not a line on a general map or a neighbor’s setup. If the answer is not public sewer, keep the appropriate onsite-wastewater investigation separate from water-account startup.
If your search also includes the Cullman County side of the area, my rural-property guide to water, septic and access helps organize those purchase questions. Its county-specific contacts should not be carried over to a Marshall County parcel. The useful connection is the habit of separating water, wastewater and access evidence before choosing the property.
The water bill and the garbage-service contact have different jobs
Arab’s garbage and recycling page says household collection is contracted to Meridian Waste and billed through Arab Water Works. It directs missed pickups and damaged-cart or replacement-cart questions to City Hall at 256-586-3544, option 3. Save that service contact separately from your payment bookmark.
This is particularly helpful during the first week, when a missing cart and an unfamiliar bill can look like one problem. Confirm that city collection applies to the property and ask for its collection day. Then use the appropriate contact for the issue you actually have. A billing relationship does not make Water Works the answer to every collection question.
For online water payments, begin at the Water Works payment page. It identifies Nexbillpay as the authorized processor, says the processing fee is disclosed before completion, and expressly warns that DOXO and other websites are not authorized to collect its online payments. Bookmark the provider’s route after checking it instead of choosing the first payment result in a search.
Turn the answers into a move you can schedule
Before committing the moving truck, put three things together for each service: the confirmed provider and location, what you still need to submit or pay, and the confirmed start or stop arrangement. A buyer taking immediate possession and a buyer leaving the home empty for several weeks may need different timing even when the house itself is identical.
For a new build, an assigned address is another prerequisite to sort out with the responsible local office. If you are also considering the West Point area, the West Point addressing and arrival guide explains why an assigned address, mailbox arrangement and recognizable driveway are separate tasks. It is a Cullman-area companion, not instructions for which office assigns an Arab property’s number.
At the handoff, retain the provider confirmations and resolve a mismatch before assuming an outgoing account has covered it. After the first bill, compare the service location, period and one-time charges with those records. This gives you a way to ask a precise question—“Is this the startup component we discussed?”—instead of treating the first total as a prediction of every month ahead.
Provider information checked October 26, 2026. Posted fees and procedures can change; obtain the current requirements for the actual property. No service boundary, connection eligibility or completion date is established by this guide.
Final Thoughts: compare the connection, not just the address
Around Arab, the useful distinction is whether you are taking over an established service arrangement or creating one. Identify that first, separate water from wastewater, and tell the electric provider about the overlap you actually need. You can then compare homes and moving dates with specific answers instead of a single, uncertain utility allowance.
