Cherokee County Move-In Cleanout: Weekly Pickup and Free Dump Day

Illustrative rural home cleanout with bagged household trash, separate items and blank paperwork by a vehicle.

A move or major cleanout in Cherokee County can produce far more than the usual weekly garbage. Before loading a pickup, separate two services: the county-contracted residential collection for participating rural homes, and the county’s limited first-Saturday no-charge landfill option for eligible residents. They have different rules. A municipal address, a new account or a full truck does not by itself make a load eligible.

The Cherokee County Commission’s current garbage page is the starting point. It describes weekly collection for rural residential units, identifies Waste Management as its contractor, and publishes the first-Saturday landfill contract terms. Verify the page and the facility’s operating status before a trip; this guide does not promise that a particular item or a particular Saturday visit will be accepted.

Start with the pickup account for the address

The county says its weekly solid-waste collection requirement applies to residents and occupants of rural Cherokee County residential units, excluding municipal residents who do not participate in that county service. Waste Management is the county’s residential collection contractor. For a rural property, ask whether the service is active at the exact address, which collection day applies, and how to make a change during a move. The county lists 256-792-6004 for Waste Management account setup or changes. That number is for the collection account; do not assume it is the landfill scale-house number.

If the address is inside a municipality, confirm the actual provider with that municipality or the current bill. The county’s landfill proof list includes Centre and Cedar Bluff water bills showing trash service, but those bills do not prove that the home is on the rural Waste Management route. Similarly, a rural mailing address alone does not decide municipal service boundaries.

Use the first-Saturday option only when the load qualifies

The county identifies Waste Management’s Three Corners Landfill at 2205 County Road 6, Piedmont, AL 36272. Its page describes a monthly “Free Dump Day” on the first Saturday, subject to the disposal-contract conditions. The quoted contract permits a Cherokee County resident to bring personal “Acceptable Wastes” from the resident’s home in a pickup truck or smaller vehicle, with the most recent garbage-collection bill. It limits each resident to one vehicle load per month and says the no-charge visit does not remove the regular pickup or disposal obligation.

Check before you load What the county page actually says What to verify
Residency and source Resident citizen of Cherokee County; personal acceptable waste from the residence Confirm the load is household material from the eligible home, not another property or a commercial job.
Vehicle and frequency Pickup truck or smaller; one truckload or vehicle load per resident per month Do not plan a trailer, a second trip or a larger vehicle as if it were covered.
Proof at arrival Centre water bill with trash service, Cedar Bluff water bill with trash service, or WM invoice/digital paid receipt Bring the current eligible document and confirm any new-account issue before driving.
Material and time The page uses “Acceptable Wastes” but does not publish an item-by-item list or gate hours Ask the landfill about each unusual item, hours and that day’s status.

The proof wording matters. The county’s contract text calls for the most recent garbage-collection bill; the page then names the three forms accepted on arrival: a City of Centre water bill showing trash service, a Cedar Bluff water bill showing trash service, or a WM invoice or digital copy of the paid receipt. If you recently closed on a home and do not yet have one of those records, call before assuming a deed, utility setup screen or seller’s old bill will substitute. The county page does not authorize those substitutes.

Sort the cleanout by what you can verify

Put ordinary weekly household garbage on the correct pickup route after confirming the service address and container rules. Keep a separate list for larger cleanout items or anything that may need special handling. The county page does not define every “Acceptable Waste,” so it does not establish that furniture, renovation debris, electronics, paint or a hazardous product belongs in the no-charge load. WM’s drop-off guidance says accepted materials vary by facility and directs people to a location’s Accepted Materials information and contact details. Use the Three Corners facility’s current listing or call the facility for the exact material, any charge and unloading requirements.

Do not treat “free” as an instruction to mix every item into a household load. Make a short inventory before moving day: what goes to weekly pickup, what might qualify for the first-Saturday visit, and what needs a different verified disposal route. That list lets you ask one precise question about each uncertain object before it is in the truck. If the facility cannot confirm an item, leave it out of the no-charge plan until an accepted route is identified.

A workable move-week checklist

When Decision to make
Before the move Confirm whether the address uses county-contracted rural collection or a municipal provider; arrange an account or transfer if needed.
Before the first Saturday Check the county page again, verify facility hours and status, and confirm the material list with the landfill.
Before leaving home Bring current accepted trash-service proof; keep the load to one pickup-size-or-smaller vehicle from your residence.
For anything unresolved Use another confirmed disposal option; do not infer acceptance from a generic landfill description.

A first-Saturday rule is a monthly opportunity, not a guarantee that today’s gate is open or that a specific item is covered. The county page does not state Three Corners’ gate hours. It asks residents to call the landfill with questions before a visit. Keep any conversation about unusual materials, holiday changes or fees tied to the actual facility and date.

Final Thoughts

For a Cherokee County cleanout, settle the address’s weekly pickup provider first. Then use the county’s first-Saturday offer only if the resident, household source, vehicle size, one-load limit, current bill proof and accepted material all fit. A few calls and a sorted load are more useful than arriving with a truck the facility cannot accept under the no-charge terms.
