A new Redstone-area job may give you a firm first day at work while childcare is still a set of possibilities. That mismatch matters when you are comparing homes. A short drive to the office is only part of the morning if the available care is in a different direction, and a promising center is not yet a confirmed start date.
I would put the care search beside the home search early, with a clear distinction between a program you may qualify for, a request you have submitted and a placement you have accepted. Here is how to organize those steps around Redstone without assuming every military-connected, civilian or contractor household follows the same route.
Start with the sponsor category, not the workplace shorthand
MilitaryChildCare.com lists approved sponsor categories that include active-duty military, defense civilians, defense contractors and other federal employees. It also uses household and spouse circumstances to determine priority. Its eligibility and priority guidelines are the right starting point; “I work at Redstone” does not describe all those circumstances.
The priority table places other federal employees and several contractor or spouse-status combinations in its space-available category. It also warns that fee-assistance programs have more restrictive eligibility rules than military-operated care. Eligibility for one route therefore does not settle eligibility for another. Give the program your actual sponsor information rather than selecting the category that sounds most favorable.
For housing planning, keep the distinction practical: an eligible request is an option to pursue, not a childcare reservation to build your entire workday around. Do not treat a coworker’s placement or benefit as proof of what your household will receive.
Use the care format to narrow the search
Redstone’s childcare-options guide describes several formats. Start by matching the care to the child and the schedule, then ask which specific programs can meet that need.
| Need | Format to investigate | Detail that affects the move |
|---|---|---|
| Regular care for a baby or preschooler | Child Development Center | The guide describes CDC care from six weeks through age five; match the child’s age and required daily hours to the actual program. |
| A smaller home-based setting or sibling-care possibility | Certified Family Child Care | Ask which providers are currently operating and whether their ages served and hours fit both children. |
| Care around the school day | School Age Center | Confirm the particular school, transportation arrangement and school-break schedule before using it in a housing comparison. |
| A short appointment or occasional gap | Hourly or other short-term care | The guide cautions that some options are not available at every garrison; do not assume an hourly service can replace a regular placement. |
Request early, then keep the request useful
MilitaryChildCare.com recommends requesting care as soon as you know the duty station and tentative arrival date. You can search multiple locations and request more than one suitable program. Follow its request and waitlist instructions rather than waiting until every moving detail is final.
Waits reflect both family priority and the request timestamp. The system provides an Anticipated Placement Time, or APT, instead of a waitlist number; that estimate can change as enrollment changes. Offers and other notifications appear in email and the dashboard’s Time Sensitive Actions. An estimate belongs in the “not yet confirmed” column of your plan.
Maintain a short record for each child: requested program, date care is needed, estimate or offer status, last contact and next action. Update changes in your household profile, and remove options you can no longer use. Redstone’s local request guide explains the account-to-request sequence. The goal is to keep useful choices open, not collect requests for places whose hours or location cannot work.
Keep CYS paperwork separate from the placement decision
Redstone Parent Outreach says Parent Central verifies eligibility using the sponsor’s status and applicable identification. Its registration guidance lists health screening and assessment requirements, with a child health assessment due within 30 days of registration; additional documents may be required for special needs or diets. Use the current local registration guidance to assemble the right documents rather than an old checklist from another installation.
The office lists 256-876-3704 and 3443 Aerobee Road, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Arrange the appropriate visit and installation access before making the trip; a map pin does not grant entry.
For families already in CYS, Redstone describes Global Data Transfer as a way to move records electronically to the next duty station. Ask the sending and receiving offices about that records-transfer process. Moving records and receiving an offer are different milestones. Keep the confirmed start date, required documents and outstanding actions separately visible.
Build a realistic budget and a community alternative
Redstone’s fee guidance bases charges on Total Family Income, including pre-tax wages and military allowances, and says parent fees are determined during enrollment. Use its fee guidance to prepare for that conversation. Do not substitute a colleague’s payment or an old online rate for your own determination.
If community-based care is part of the plan, start with the Alabama DHR parent resources and state childcare directory. The directory allows county, ZIP and name searches and includes licensed and exempt filters. Read the status of the particular provider; appearing in a directory is not the same as a current vacancy, a recommendation or approval for military fee assistance.
Compare the written quote, hours, closure calendar, start date and any deposit or withdrawal terms for each serious option. Keep fee assistance as a separate determination with the responsible program. This makes it easier to see whether a temporary arrangement is affordable on its own while a longer-term request remains unresolved.
Test the whole day against a home candidate
Use the actual care address, actual work location and the person responsible for each trip. Compare home-to-care-to-work in the morning and the pickup trip separately. If two adults share those trips, both routes matter; the home nearest one workplace may not produce the simplest combined day.
Here is a planning example, not a local travel-time estimate. Suppose work ends at 4:30 p.m. and confirmed care closes at 5:30 p.m. If your observed work-to-care trip takes 25 minutes and you allow 10 minutes for pickup, 25 minutes remain for delay. A different location with a 40-minute trip leaves only 10 minutes under the same assumptions. Replace those numbers with your own observed route and the provider’s actual rules before comparing homes.
Repeat the test for days when the usual pickup adult cannot go. Ask the provider about authorized pickup arrangements, then decide who could realistically make the trip. A backup name is less useful if that person cannot meet the actual closing time or access requirements.
For the separate worksite and gate-access questions, my Redstone worksite and home-search guide helps organize the commute. If healthcare is another recurring destination, the healthcare handoff guide covers coverage and provider-location planning. Keep each confirmed destination in the same housing comparison without assuming one arrangement settles another.

Final Thoughts
You do not need every childcare detail settled before exploring homes, but you do need to know which parts are confirmed and which are still possibilities. Request early, keep the paperwork moving and compare the whole day—not just the distance to Redstone. That gives you a housing decision that can accommodate the routine your household will actually have.
