Courtland – Lawrence County

Courtland is a town in Lawrence County with a historic square and a much longer story than a quick drive-through can explain. Getting to know it works best as two connected tasks: noticing the town’s physical history, and finding the right contact for the services you would actually use. Courtland and North Courtland are distinct municipalities; a familiar place name or nearby landmark does not settle a property’s jurisdiction.

Courtland: town boundary from the 2024 U.S. Census Bureau, with the same boundary highlighted in a Northern Alabama locator inset. North is up. Editorial area: Central Corridor. Not a property or service-boundary map.

What can the square tell me about Courtland?

The town’s history page explains that the square was set aside in 1818 for a courthouse that was never built. That is a useful starting point for understanding its open center. The page also identifies the former Sherrod Hotel northwest of the square on Alabama Street and the old firehouse south of the square, with the historic railroad route running just to the south.

The town traces its origins to a trade center in the plantation economy. Its architectural story is not one style or one construction date. The town describes early Federal-period buildings alongside later Victorian, Colonial Revival and bungalow forms. Its history gallery names the Moore-Rebman-Corum, Hubbard-Blythe-Letson, Campbell-Gilchrist-Norwood and Tweedy-Norton-Morris houses. Use the gallery to recognize changes in the streetscape, not as a list of interiors open for visiting.

A self-guided look should stay on public routes and respect private property. A historic-house listing is not an invitation to enter a yard, porch or building. If you are considering an older home, ask Town Hall which records, permits or property-specific review requirements apply before assuming that the town’s general historic description answers a renovation question.

How do I arrange a museum or library visit?

Make a contact plan before a special trip. The Courtland Heritage Museum page directs visitors to 256-637-2707 for information, while the library page provides a separate assistance number, 256-522-8035. Ask about the location, opening arrangements and the resource you want to use.

The website repeats Town Hall’s weekday hours across department pages; that shared header is not enough to confirm museum admission hours or library lending arrangements. For a history-focused visit, ask about the museum first, then leave time to look at the square. For a library errand, confirm card eligibility and the service you need rather than assume all municipal facilities follow one schedule.

Which town contact fits my question?

The town’s contact page identifies Town Hall at 361 College Street, Courtland, AL 35618, 256-637-2707. Published Town Hall hours are Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m.; confirm holiday or appointment changes before travelling.

Question Official starting point Have ready
Residence or billing inquiry Town Hall — 256-637-2707 The service address and the question you need routed.
Electric-department assistance Courtland Electric Department — 256-214-3024 The actual property and whether the issue is service, equipment or an account.
Library assistance Courtland Library — 256-522-8035 The material or service needed and your intended visit date.

These contacts are a starting point, not a statement that every Courtland mailing address receives the same services. In particular, an electric-department contact does not establish the water, sewer or waste provider. Confirm each existing account with the responsible organization, and use the Lawrence County guide for county property-record and school-system questions.

Plan an ordinary visit separately from an event day

The town website promotes self-guided walking and driving visits, but its displayed event list still contains 2025 dates as of this review. Do not carry those dates into a 2026 plan. Ask Town Hall for the current arrangements if you want a guided event, festival or holiday outing; a historic calendar entry is not confirmation that something is happening on your visit.

For a home search, a quieter visit can help you compare the square and service destinations with the trips you would repeat. I can help organize those questions and an address-based search through the relocation guide. Keep the historic-district story, the Census town outline and the individual property record separate—each answers a different question.
