Valley Head – DeKalb County

Valley Head Park offers more than one kind of visit: playground time, a picnic or a walk that climbs partway up a ridge. That difference is worth understanding when you are trying to picture an ordinary afternoon near a possible home. Pair the outing with the right municipal or school contact, rather than treating every destination with “Valley Head” in its name as the same office or service boundary.

What kind of outing can I plan at Valley Head Park?

The town’s park page lists toddler play equipment, swings, climbing structures, picnic tables and pavilions, bathrooms and a basketball court with lighting. It also describes a one-mile path through the forest that leads partway up the ridge and back down. A playground visit and that ridge walk are different levels of activity; choose the experience that fits your group.

Your plan What the town describes What to decide before setting out
Playground and picnic Toddler equipment, swings, climbing structures, tables and pavilions Choose the facilities your group needs; a listed pavilion is not a confirmed reservation.
A wooded walk A one-mile path climbing partway up the ridge and returning Plan for the ascent and descent; a one-mile description is not a step-free-access promise.
Basketball A court with lighting Lighting does not establish unrestricted overnight park access.

The park borders private property, and the town asks visitors to stay on the path. Big Wills Creek runs through the park, but a creek beside a public trail does not establish a swimming area or permission to cross onto neighboring land. Use the official park page for current information and ask Town Hall about any facility-use arrangements that matter to your visit.

Where do I take a municipal question?

The town’s department page gives Town Hall at 41 Anderson Street, Valley Head, AL 35989, 256-635-6814, and vhtownhall@farmerstel.com. This is the municipal contact, not a verified park entrance or a water-account desk. When asking about a pavilion gathering, give the planned date and use; when asking about a property, give its actual address and the issue you need routed.

The town also maintains an area business directory with separate entries for retail, local services and employers. Use the individual business contact for its current hours or appointment needs. A municipal directory is useful for discovery, but it is not a live opening-hours service or a blanket endorsement of a provider.

Which school contact should a relocating household use?

The current district-hosted Valley Head High School site lists 256-635-6228 and links School Registration, the staff directory, counselor information and transcript requests. Use that current school route for student-specific questions rather than treating the town’s older school link as the enrollment portal.

Start with the student’s needs and the actual home address. The school can direct you to the appropriate enrollment or records contact; this guide does not determine attendance assignment from the town name. Keep school decisions separate from the park visit or a general impression of the community, and use verified operational information rather than unsupported rankings.

Who handles the sanitation signup?

Henagar’s sanitation page explicitly names Valley Head in its service-expansion notice dated for July 1, 2025 and provides signup routes and 256-657-6282 for questions. That is an intermunicipal service connection, not a reason to assume that Valley Head Town Hall opens the account. Confirm the exact collection address and schedule with the operator; the area notice does not certify service at every parcel.

Keep a larger outdoor trip separate

For a trip farther into the Lookout Mountain area, the DeSoto Falls viewpoint and trail guide explains the separate approaches and effort involved. It answers a different question from this local park visit. A ridge path in town, a waterfall overlook and a descent toward a basin should not become one vague promise of “nearby hiking.”

Try the outing you would actually repeat and follow up with the right office for the household questions it cannot answer. That gives a Valley Head home search a practical foundation: a specific recreation routine, a current school contact and a clear route for service questions—not assumptions based on a shared place name.
