Hatton – Lawrence County

Hatton offers a useful lesson in reading local place names: the community is a Census-designated place in Lawrence County, while its school campus uses a Town Creek postal address. Neither label by itself answers where a home enrolls, who maintains its road or how a new driveway is approved. Connect the named community with those practical decisions before comparing properties.

Why can a Hatton school have a Town Creek address?

This page retains the site’s Hatton CDP identity and 2024 Census outline; it is not a municipal service boundary. Hatton High School’s own account places its campus on Alabama Highway 101, two miles south of Highway 157, and gives a Town Creek mailing address. That is a specific campus description, not evidence that every Hatton home is inside Town Creek town limits.

The high school lists grades seven through twelve and says Hatton Elementary shares the campus. Hatton Elementary’s page describes PreK through sixth grade. Those are grade spans, not an enrollment guarantee. The district must confirm the particular home, student’s grade and intended year. Start with the district handoff in the Lawrence County guide rather than selecting a school solely because its name matches the listing.

What should you establish before adding a driveway?

For a property fronting a county road, the Lawrence County Road Department publishes a dedicated driveway-access application. That is a different question from a home’s mailing address or the apparent amount of open land. Do not assume its county-road process applies to an Alabama state-highway frontage. Establish the road owner first.

The Application for Turnout to Private Entrance asks for the county-road number, proposed entrance location and property owner. Its office-only section specifies the required pipe; the applicant agrees to maintain drainage structures and avoid directing water onto the highway or filling ditches. The form says a work order follows receipt of the signed permit and notice that pipe has been delivered, and that the application is valid for 90 days. Treat that as a sequence to coordinate with the department, not permission to choose a culvert or begin work from a downloaded form.

Before committing to a layout Why it matters
Identify the road and proposed entrance The county application identifies a particular turnout location; the school’s Highway101 address does not tell you who controls another property’s frontage.
Ask the responsible office to establish drainage requirements The form reserves pipe specifications for office personnel. A convenient-looking entrance is not a drainage design.
Coordinate the house, driveway and wastewater plan The driveway occupies space that may also affect the planned septic treatment and replacement areas; resolve the arrangement before fixing the layout.

My Lawrence County home-and-septic-site planning guide explains that last step in depth. It distinguishes soil evaluation, the proposed home, treatment space and permission to construct, without treating acreage as proof of suitability.

Where do household waste and service questions go?

The county Solid Waste Department lists 256-974-2573 for collection and disposal questions. Use the actual address to establish the route and what can be collected before putting move-in debris beside a cart. The page includes Christmas and New Year notices without a year; they are not a reliable calendar for the next holiday. Ask for the current dated route notice instead of carrying an old Thursday-to-Wednesday change forward.

Water and wastewater require separate confirmation. The county guide links the actual provider application routes; a water-account setup is not evidence of a sewer connection. Keep the confirmed service names, connection status and any site-work quote beside the driveway and home plan so one approval does not stand in for another.

Where can you plan a county outing beyond the school routine?

Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center is a separate Lawrence County destination, not a park claimed to be inside Hatton. Its operator pricing page distinguishes free self-guided museum and property visits from guided tours and field trips beginning at $5 per person. The hours page lists Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday closed; check school-holiday exceptions before choosing the day.

Use the Oakville museum-and-landscape guide for the fuller visit: it connects interpretation inside with the surviving earthworks, keeps different historical periods distinct and explains why an open-looking slope is not an invitation to climb. A nearby learning opportunity can enrich the week without establishing a home’s service eligibility or a guaranteed drive time.
