A blue recycling bin may already be part of the weekly routine at a City of Cullman home. The city has announced that its residential curbside program will change on February 1, 2027: pickup will become an optional, paid cart service, while a free city drop-off option remains. If you are moving into a home or planning next year’s household routine, the first question is which service you actually want—and whether that address is served by the city.
This is an announced future change as of November 8, 2026, not a service already in effect. The city’s posted residential recycling FAQ and Sanitation & Recycling page supply the options below. Confirm the current implementation details with the department before changing a household account or relying on a pickup date. The featured cart scene is a fictional illustration, not an official city cart or a Cullman property.
Choose the service, then check the address
The announced cart service is for the City of Cullman’s residential sanitation customers. A Cullman postal address or a home elsewhere in Cullman County does not by itself establish city service. Ask the seller, landlord or utility provider which sanitation department serves the particular property, and confirm that with the City of Cullman Sanitation Department if a city cart is part of your move-in plan. For a broader rural-property provider check, my Cullman County water, septic and access guide explains why a mailing address cannot settle every service question; it does not define this recycling program’s eligibility.
| Household choice | What the city has announced | Your next check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep curbside recycling | Optional 96-gallon rolling cart at $10 per month, per cart, beginning February 1, 2027. | Ask Sanitation whether a new or transferring household can still enroll after the posted September 18, 2026 signup deadline, and confirm the current charge and collection route. |
| Recycle without the paid cart | City residents may use the City Recycling Center without a drop-off fee. | Confirm current hours and accepted materials before a trip; the city’s posted hours differ slightly across pages. |
| Do not use either recycling service | No optional recycling-cart signup or $10 cart charge is required; regular trash service continues under its own rules. | Confirm the actual trash provider and account setup for the property. |
The $10 figure is the announced recycling-cart charge, not a quote for all sanitation services. The city says one cart costs $10 monthly and that the program is voluntary; it does not require a household that declines the cart to pay that recycling fee. The city Sanitation & Recycling page posts the application link, the 96-gallon cart detail and the planned February start. Ask the department about any later rate, route, billing or eligibility update for your account.
The September signup date has passed
The city’s current Sanitation & Recycling page asks residents wishing to continue curbside pickup to submit the agreement by September 18, 2026. That date is already past. The city’s August newsletter also mentioned an earlier September 11 date in a council recap, then gave September 18 in the detailed program section. Do not treat either date as a live enrollment window or assume a late request will be accepted. If you are buying after the deadline, changing addresses, renting, or reconsidering an earlier choice, call Sanitation at 256-737-7560 and ask what current signup or transfer route, if any, applies. The department page links the form; a downloadable form alone does not prove late enrollment is available.
The old 18-gallon blue bins are also part of the transition. The city says they cannot be used to continue curbside recycling under the new program and that its Sanitation Department plans to remove blue bins put at the curb during January 25–28, 2027, the last week of the current bin service. That is a scheduled future collection, not an instruction to put every bin out today. Confirm the city’s latest notice before the handoff week, especially if your closing or lease date falls near it. Make the free drop-off option workable
The city says its Recycling Center at 925 Convent Road NE remains free for city residents. It lists paper, cardboard, plastics numbered 1 and 2, tin and aluminum as accepted materials. Its department page also lists exclusions such as glass, plastic bags, batteries, electronics and household trash. Keep that current list handy rather than assuming every package marked “recyclable” belongs in the cart or at the center. Review the city’s accepted and excluded items.
There is a small but real planning discrepancy: the city’s FAQ and August newsletter list the center as open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the Sanitation & Recycling department page says 7 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The safe practical step is to call before loading a car, particularly near closing time or a holiday. Neither posted schedule establishes an evening or weekend drop-off option. A free drop-off has a different time and transportation cost from a paid pickup; choose the one your household can actually use.
Put the choice on your move-in checklist
For a property you are considering, ask for the existing sanitation provider, service address and account-transfer steps. Then ask the city whether that address qualifies for the new curbside cart, whether enrollment is still possible after the old deadline, when the cart would arrive, and how the $10 charge would appear on the bill. If you plan to drop off instead, check your normal travel route to the recycling center and the currently accepted materials. Keep the answers dated; the program has not yet reached its announced start.
A seller’s blue bin, a map label saying Cullman, or a downloadable signup form cannot answer all those questions. They are clues to take to the provider. This is a small service decision, but it is easier to make before a move than after the first missed pickup or unnecessary cart charge.
Final Thoughts
The City of Cullman has announced a February 2027 choice: pay for optional curbside recycling by cart, use the free city drop-off center, or decline the recycling service. Confirm that the home is in the city service area, ask about late or new-resident enrollment, and check current hours and charges before you decide. The posted September 2026 signup deadline should be treated as past, not as an open invitation.
