Centre is a city in Cherokee County and the county seat, but a county-library task and a city-service request still lead to different places. A move-in week may involve printing documents, arranging a card or asking about a pile of limbs. I would organize those errands by the service you need rather than head for the first government building on the map.

Can I use the library computer lab before getting a card?
Yes. The Cherokee County Public Library services page says a library card is not required for its computer lab. It describes black-and-white printing, self-service scanning, copying and sending or receiving faxes. The library is at 310 Mary Street, Centre, AL 35960, with phone 256-927-5838 on its contact page.
| Document task | Published per-page charge |
|---|---|
| Self-service copy | $0.10 |
| Print from a computer | $0.20 |
| Fax | $0.50 |
Confirm the current charge, payment method and equipment availability before a time-sensitive visit. The county’s library description places the computer lab upstairs. Ask about the actual access arrangement if stairs or equipment placement matter to your visit; that description alone does not settle accessibility.
Bring the document in a usable format and leave time to check the output. A public computer is not a private office, and an available scanner does not guarantee that a receiving agency will accept the resulting file. Finish the task by checking your own confirmation or receipt, not merely by seeing a page print.
What is different about a borrowing card and an online-only card?
The library’s card page asks for current photo identification, an alternate contact and proof of residence such as a current utility bill or recent postmarked mail. Its eligibility list refers to Cherokee and surrounding-county residents and people who work or own property in Cherokee County. Ask staff how the requirements apply if you are moving or your documents show different addresses.
The page says ages six–18 need a guardian’s signature and that new cards are not issued in the final 15 minutes before closing. An online-access-only Ecard is a separate option for adult Alabama residents; staff contact the applicant with card information. It is not described as an instant physical borrowing card, although physical cards can also be used with Libby.
Decide which kind of use you want before applying. Someone who wants only digital reading has a different immediate task from someone who needs physical books today. Confirm opening hours and allow time for the card process rather than arrive just before closing with a stack of selections.
Can I reserve a meeting space or research family history there?
The services page describes a conference room for nonprofit groups, subject to policy, scheduling and the director’s discretion, plus a small meeting space by reservation. It also offers Ancestry Library Edition and FamilySearch through genealogy computers. These are distinct uses: neither an ordinary computer visit nor a card automatically reserves a group room.
Describe your group’s purpose, size and intended time when asking about space. For research, bring the names, dates and places you already know so the visit has a clear starting question. A genealogy resource is not the same as a current property-title or boundary record; use the responsible records office for those questions.
Where does a city street, drainage or collection question go?
Centre’s Public Works page identifies curbside garbage collection, limb and debris pickup, street and right-of-way maintenance, and drainage concerns as department responsibilities. Its published city contact is 350 East Main Street, Centre, AL 35960, 256-927-5222, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
That service description does not publish a collection day, material limit or a promise to remove every cleanout. Give staff the actual address and describe the material before setting it out. For a drainage concern, explain the location and what you observed without assuming the city is responsible for work on private property. The city-office hours should not be mistaken for the library’s schedule.
What if the home uses a private well?
First confirm the actual water source. If the property has a private well, the Centre-area private-well handoff guide explains the separate equipment, records and testing questions. A Centre address or a neighboring home’s utility bill cannot establish the supply at your prospective property.
The Cherokee County guide adds property-record and school-system routes. I can help organize those questions around a home shortlist while the library, city and appropriate specialists confirm the details.
